ASK NASSJA

A Moroccan Berber rug is a handwoven rug rooted in the weaving traditions of Morocco's Amazigh (Berber) communities. Styles vary widely by region, from thick, high-pile rugs suited to cooler mountain areas to flatwoven pieces with bold geometric patterns. What they share is a hand-based process, with each rug woven row by row on a loom.

Yes. Nassja focuses exclusively on handmade Moroccan rugs, and every rug we offer is made by hand rather than by machine. That handmade character can be seen in the finished piece.

Nassja rugs are handmade in Morocco by local Moroccan artisans. Operating from Morocco, Nassja works with local Moroccan artisans to bring their craft to homes around the world. The making of each rug depends on human skill, practiced technique, and careful handwork.

Moroccan rugs can be made from different fibers depending on the style and construction. Nassja rugs are made from wool, a material widely used in traditional Moroccan rug-making for its texture, warmth, and character.

No single feature alone proves authenticity, so it helps to look at the whole picture. Consider the overall construction, natural handmade variations, the materials, and the weaving technique. Clear information about where and how the rug was made, and a seller who is open about all of this, are just as important when you evaluate a rug.

The difference is in how the rug is built. A handmade rug is created by hand using traditional weaving or knotting techniques, while a machine-made rug is produced mechanically with greater uniformity and speed. Handmade rugs naturally carry subtle variations that reflect the human process behind their making.

Because each rug is woven by hand, no two rows are made in exactly the same way. You may notice subtle differences in dimensions, weave, texture, pattern, shape, or color, such as a line that shifts slightly or a tone that deepens across the rug. These are natural characteristics of handmade work, not defects, and they are a large part of what gives a handmade Moroccan rug its warmth and individuality.

Start by measuring the room and the furniture the rug will sit under or beside. In a living room, many people choose a size that lets at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs rest on the rug, while in a dining room the rug usually extends far enough beyond the table for chairs to pull out comfortably. If you send us your room's dimensions, we'll be glad to help you choose a Ready-to-Ship size or a custom size.

We aim to show each rug as accurately as possible, but colors can appear slightly different depending on your screen, device, lighting, and photography. A rug may also look warmer or cooler in different rooms and at different times of day. If color is especially important for your space, feel free to ask us about a specific rug before ordering.

Custom orders can include a direction for color and design as well as size. Contact us with your ideas and we'll discuss what is possible and agree on the specifications before production begins. Not every request may be achievable, so we confirm the details with you directly.

Production of a Custom / Made-to-Order rug takes approximately 20–40 business days. Once the rug is finished and dispatched, estimated delivery is 6–18 business days, depending on the destination, customs clearance, and carrier operations.

Ready-to-Ship rugs are processed and dispatched within 1–3 business days, then delivered in an estimated 6–18 business days. Custom / Made-to-Order rugs take approximately 20–40 business days to produce, followed by the same 6–18 business day delivery estimate after dispatch. These are estimates and can vary with your destination, customs clearance, and carrier operations. See our Shipping Policy for full details.

We ship with trusted international carriers, including DHL Express, FedEx, and Aramex. The carrier for your order depends on your destination, the package size, and shipping requirements.

Yes. Once your order has been dispatched, you'll receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking number. You can follow your shipment on the website of the assigned carrier, which may be DHL Express, FedEx, or Aramex. Tracking information can take a little time to become active after dispatch.

International orders may be subject to customs duties, import taxes, or other local charges imposed by the destination country. These charges are not included in the product price and, where applicable, are the customer's responsibility. Because they are set by local authorities, Nassja cannot control or predict the amount. You may wish to check with your local customs office before ordering.

If your rug arrives damaged, contact us within 48 hours of delivery by email at support@nassja.com or on WhatsApp, with your order number and clear photos of the rug, the packaging, and the damaged area. Once we've reviewed it, we'll offer an appropriate refund or exchange.

If you receive a different rug from the one you ordered, contact us within 14 days of delivery with your order number and photos of the item received. We'll arrange the return and provide a replacement where available or a refund to your original payment method. You won't pay return shipping for damaged or incorrect items.

If your order hasn't arrived within the estimated delivery timeframe, contact us with your order number. We'll review the tracking information and, where necessary, open an investigation with the carrier. If the shipment is confirmed lost, we'll offer a replacement where possible or issue a refund to your original payment method, with no additional shipping cost to you.

Yes. Eligible Ready-to-Ship rugs can be returned within 14 days of the delivery date. The rug must be unused and in its original condition, and every return must be authorized by Nassja before the rug is shipped back.

To start a return, contact us at support@nassja.com or on WhatsApp with your full name, order number, and reason for the return.

There are no restocking fees, and full details are in our Returns & Refunds Policy.

Custom / Made-to-Order rugs are handcrafted specifically to your chosen size or specifications, so they are final sale and not eligible for standard returns or exchanges. This does not affect your options if a custom rug arrives damaged, if you receive the wrong item, or if a shipment is confirmed lost; those cases are handled under our damaged, incorrect, and lost order policies.

For standard returns, the customer is responsible for return shipping costs. We recommend a tracked and insured shipping service, as Nassja cannot be responsible for returns that are lost or damaged in transit. If you received a damaged or incorrect item, Nassja covers the applicable return shipping costs.

Once your returned rug has been received and inspected, please allow 7–10 business days for verification and refund processing. Approved refunds are issued to your original form of payment.

We accept major credit and debit cards, PayPal, and bank transfer. Additional payment options may also be available at checkout depending on your location and device.

Regular, gentle care goes a long way. Vacuum on a low-power setting, rotate the rug periodically so it wears evenly, blot spills quickly, and avoid excessive moisture and harsh chemicals. Always follow any specific care instructions supplied with your rug, as the right approach can depend on its materials and construction.

Yes. Vacuum gently on a low-power setting and avoid aggressive rotating brushes that may pull or damage the fibers. Regular light vacuuming helps remove everyday dust and grit.

We don't recommend machine washing a handmade Moroccan rug as a general rule. The right cleaning method depends on the rug's materials and construction, and machine washing can risk damaging a handwoven piece. Follow the care instructions for your specific rug, or use a professional rug cleaner for a deeper clean.

Some new pile rugs, especially wool rugs, may shed loose fibers left over from the weaving process. Where this happens, it usually reduces over time with regular, gentle vacuuming. How much a rug sheds, if at all, depends on its materials and construction. If you have concerns about your rug, contact us at support@nassja.com.

Wool rugs can sometimes carry a mild natural scent after unpacking, especially after time spent sealed in packaging during transit. In most cases, this fades as the rug airs out in a well-ventilated room. Whether a rug has any scent varies from rug to rug.

Act quickly and blot the spill with a clean, dry cloth. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing, which can push the spill deeper and damage the fibers, and avoid soaking the area. If you want to use a cleaning product, test it on a discreet area first, and avoid harsh chemicals.

Professional cleaning is recommended for deep cleaning, difficult stains, or delicate handmade rugs. A cleaner experienced with handwoven rugs can choose a method suited to your rug's materials, which is safer than aggressive cleaning at home.

Suitability depends on the individual rug's material, pile, and construction, as well as how the space will be used. As a general guide, a denser, lower pile tends to be easier to maintain in busy areas, while a high, plush pile may need more frequent care. Check the product details for the rug you are considering, and contact us if you'd like help comparing options for your home.
